It does sound like you are completely new to the digital painting business. What's your experience with art in general?

Re: Photoshop and Digital Painting ressources

If you have Photoshop, you don't really need more resources. What you need so far is perhaps a tutorial on how to use Photoshop itself. Personally I like to learn by experimenting but I guess there's lots I'm missing that way.

Anyway there's bound to be millions of tutorials out there and it's hard for us to judge which once would suit you best, so I suggest you do a google search for "Photoshop Tutorials".

EDIT: Actually here's a page that might be useful if you're a complete beginner: http://sixrevisions.com/graphics-design/35-basic-tutorials-to-get-you-started-with-photoshop/

I think Photoshop is the best software with its great variability. There are few very good websites with tutorials. For example http://psd.tutsplus.comhttp://10steps.sghttp://www.psdbox.com/.

You can find there tutorials for all levels.
