Re: MYFX Challenge #300 - Workshop Challenge '300 Spartans' - WIPS

I've just dug out my copy of issue 86, and I'm not sure how any of the workshops relate to the challenge subject matter?

It's probably my fault, as I suggested Spartans during the discussion about workshop based challenges, after the talk about starting them with number 300, but I didn't intend a connection between the two things when I said it - it was purely the number "300" making me think of the movie.

hmmm, i wondered, to be honest this is going to be quite difficult (for me) if it's means i'm going to have a get the mag and think of a workshop based around it. How can we simplify, i was also thinking that if someone doesn't get the mag it will restrict them from entering?

Re: MYFX Challenge #300 - Workshop Challenge '300 Spartans' - WIPS

Would it be easier if you made the 'workshop challenge' seperate to the weekly? Maybe once the Bi-Weekly Tarot challenge has finished, make the 'Workshop Challenge' the new Bi-Weekly one? As for the challenge itself, most issues of the mag are based around a theme anyway, so just use the same theme as the issue and specify people must use some of the resources from the disc (or mag tutorials if people with digital editions don't get the disc content).

*edit* Actually, do you need to specify people use resources from the disc? Why not just say it would be a great way to use those resources and practice the workshops, but using them isn't mandatory.

As for challenge 300, I like the idea of using the film.

That's what I had in mind when I suggested this challenge. Forum members may not have the magazine, but at least the tutorials for the issue should be on the 'workshops' tab on the IFX site wouldn't they?

Just make the challenge about the theme. i.e, Brief: Pin up Pulp cover. Or, if you so desired, 300 Pulp cover.

The CD resorces are not required, but it would just give an added insentive for those with them to blow the dust off and find a project that could actually use them!

You could also put in a link to the desired workshop, or point out the issue and page numbers so that the forum members know where to look and what the theme is actually based on.

If quizzes are quizzical, then what are tests?...

I didn't realise issue 86 was the pulp issue. Design the cover for a pulp novel based on the film 300 would be pretty good. Lots of swords, shields and bare flesh with a limited palette; what more do you need in a challenge ;)

As Stouffer the cat would say "Sorted. Respect Due."

Unless we're all still around for challenges numbers 1984, 1999, 2001, 2010 etc, I think challenge 300 might be the only one with an obvious movie tie-in, so it seems too good an opportunity to pass up.

Of course, challenge 451 has to be something Ray Bradbury connected, and challenge 666 has obvious connotations.

If we hadn't already passed challenge 101 we could have had a black & white theme...

Nah that would have needed to be a Matrix tie in surely?

Ok then, let's start the ball rolling....

Here's a WIP of a female Sparten. Seeing as how I have not seen the film I figured it does not matter if I brake the rules! I thought the advice in the workshop about a strong, lone light source was the way to go, so I am experimenting. It's very sketchy,  I know, but feel free to give any feedback!

I hope this works. I have just got myself a new computer and I am still trying to figure out what the heck it does!!

An update... I don't think I will continue with this, but at least it is an example of following the workshop tips. I think the pixelated effect looks ace!

I blame Kaz for distracting me from the piccy I'm trying to work on. Nothing to do with my lack of will power or focus, no siree. It's all that blasted forum witch and her witchyness in concocting such interesting challenges Stick out tongue

Not sure if it quite fits a pulp cover, but here's wip 1:
