edit; oh! and I've been accuased of art thief! OMG ^0^ im so happy, it was for my maid pinup drawing...thehehe silly little guy, he wanted to see my sketches andWIP to prove it was mine and stuff... but it wasn't in the middle of a crowd it was on conceptart forums, and no one payed any attention to him so I don't care much, I just think it's funny because it's my first time.

Har badge of honour, he makes the accusation, fair enough, yet he tells you to provide proof of honesty! Treat the loser with the contempt he deserves.

Re: Anyone ever been accused of plagiarism?

My elementary teacher accused me of stealing concept from a sci-fi novel cover and gave me an F for my project. I was in 4th grade and my drawing had a crappy little house and a crappy little car, and in the background a crappy little bridge. My little heart could not comprehend the tremendous amount of pain inflicted onto me and it trembled.

I prayed long and hard for countless nights and finally one of the gods took pity. That psycho teacher was divorced by her husband, got busted stealing a designer bag at a department store, got fired from her job, and had one of her finger sliced off by some sharp object while she was being thrown out of her apartment for not paying rent.

I was on the opposite end once, but had clear evidence of plagairism.

I was moderating a writing forum, and one person posted a short story.  Ho hum romance but later, I was reading a book, and she had lifted word.for.word from the book.  Only changed the names and descriptions of the characters.  I immediately deleted her story, contacted her with the reason why and she had a complete hissy fit.  Didn't see the 'harm' since it wasn't meant for publication, and the scene perfectly fit her story.  Unbelievable.  I wonder how much of her other work had been lifted?  It was pure fluke (and desperation for something to read) that had me reading the novel she had lifted from.

yian, how old is year 4? i think we have different year groups here, but it's a bit nasty of your teacher to accuse you!

i've seen a couple of blatant plagiarism postings on this forum, they usually get outted though. I don't see the point, if you are copying, you are not learning, and you are also going to get found out pretty quickly, there are some really knowledgeable artists here who usually spot it instantly.

Well, I started my first grade when I was 6, so 4th grade would be 10 or 11. I was probably 11 yrs old since I remember it was the last project. The drawing wasn't bad at all; it was fully colored and had some basic understanding of perspective, and it was honest work!

Re: Anyone ever been accused of plagiarism?

I'm downright terrified by the thought of being accused of plagiarism! Especialy in this litigious atmosphere we all live in.

I, as with many of you no doubt, have a pretty healthy encyclopedia of artwork we've seen crammed inside our heads. Every time I think of starting a new picture though, I research extensively to see if, what I have in mind, has been done before. Yes, Sci-fi and fantasy art is cyclical and derivative for the most part, but still!

I actually have a line of illos just waiting to be printed out soon. But until then, I fell I can't show anybody (that I don't really know) until they are on the market. Mainly due to the fact that they are fairly simple but unique concepts (commercial graphics artwork). The design would be easy to rip-off by some carnei at a state fair who wants to put them on mirrors, keychains, mugs, etc. so you can never win them in thier rigged games!

    But I digress...(to late)

I do agree with some though that the woman in question had no class at all. Given the venue and all.

I would go with the peeling tactic, suits me just fine.

She seemed harmless to me. A simple 'look dear it's a comic and a few of them look a bit samey' would've sufficed.

If you're accused of plagiarism so what? It's only a problem if you have plagiarised someone else's work...

Unfortunately, thats not what she said. According to P_Reilly:

After about 10 minutes of looking at one of the prints one of the women said "This is not your art...I've seen this somewhere else".

That pretty much screams, "No class". She might as well have stood on the table (on his artwork of course) and, with her monkey-like arms (no doubt), started swinging from the rafters screaching, "PLAGIARIST! PLAGIARIST! Ooo OOoo PLAGIARIST!" At least I'm almost sure thats how P_Reilly felt.

On the second point, it really does'nt matter if someone accuses us. It's when they get the rumour campain started. That's when the ol' reputation as an artist is at stake.

One point I must add here. If anybody is a plagiarist, proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was thier original intent for capital gain, they should be punished under the VARA and, if applicable, copyright laws.

No. Plagiarists copy other images and claim them as originals belonging to them, class has nothing to do with it.

I take the rumour campaign seriously and have commented upon it earlier in this thread.

Did it ever occur to you she may have made a genuine mistake?

Well, as it appears to me you have a moral stance concerning the act of plagiarism and artists that indulge in it, I wonder if you'll indulge me?

    I've a test for you...

In this thread a member called cottonballs00 has posted a suspected plagiarised image along with the potential original image.

I want you to tell me whether or not you think an act of plagiarism has taken place.

There was an Image of the Day a little while back that was cribbed from a Joe Quesada Daredevil cover.

I sent a PM to Claire about it, but she wouldn't have gotten it until the next day probably, by which point the offending piece was no longer Image of the Day anyway.

There is another particular piece from way before that which I'm sure is swiped from something, but I just can't quite place it - I'm not going to link to it until such time as I remember what.
