Well decided to do a line tutorial today on concept art, I've always been interested in rendering in pen line, so I thought I'd learn better how. Tomorrow I will practice what I learnt. In addition I did a bit of loomis and some posemaniacs and of course some sketches from my head no ref.
K well started with a page from loomis, female proportions. TBH I didn't enjoy it at all, I hate copying things when they've got to be accurate, the whole time I was thinking, no way this is wrong women don't look like this, I know my rendition's rubbish, but the proportion's just look unrealistic, in the book too! Anyway, did that. Didn't learn much, read a bit about perspective in the book, might practice that tomorrow.
15sec poses, pen
30sec marker - didn't take hand off paper! - well it's an experiment - was interesting, might try it periodically - you concentrate more on looking rather than drawing.
Started pen tutorial - didn't scan it all - here's some, if you're interested in pen I'd recommend this tutorial, only takes a couple hours.
Me trying to be clever and render a face, this is how NOT to do it, as I later found out :) unless you're going for a barb wire effect XD
Had to make a big blod thing up then light it - see where the CORE shadow is shaded! along the contours =0
Some balls, etc
Value sheet using different densities of cross hatching.
Dos and Don'ts
More dos and don'ts
Exercise to end the tutorial - we had to trace these, purely as practice - some I use marker instead of black as it's too laborious rendering black with cross hatching.
Some personal practice - all from my head with no ref - the heads are practicing what I learnt from the loomis book how to draw heads.
Some posemaniacs as a night cap - sore eyes and arm now hehe.
tbh - posemaniacs has been ALOT more use than any number of books, tutorials, or anything, for drawing the figure... ofc life drawing is good; should have some to show this week, finally. =0
Some stuff I did, figure work, as you might tell I want to draw figures one day, in any pose out of my head, I have started studying bridgeman and Vilppu.
LOL went to life drawing Tuesday, there were loads of problems, hardly got an hours sketching in, I should complain. Anyway, I did *** but I learnt something lol. I haven't done life drawing for 6months, gonna try harder tomorrow!! Dunno why but I seemed to lose all drawing skill I learnt over the last couple of months and completely gone back to how I drew before, maybe it's just drawing with other ppl around anyway hopefully I improve, posting this crap on here just so I can document my progress (or lack of!)
15sec poseeees

Burne hogarth drawing
Learning Vilppu - this is more experimental now, learning about how the body flows in rhythm, the guys a genius I love watching him draw.
Your figure drawings are really great looking and have a lot of life. really admire your consistency in keeping up with those poses and it's really good that you mix it up with life drawing. that's a very important activity that I so often ignore.
Thanks Mantisenator, yeah life drawing is good practice for sure, so much harder than drawing infront of the computer.
So today - well on the one day a week I leave the house and go into class, I completely drew from life today, being out the house for 14hours doesn't give ya much choice.
So I did some gesture sketches in my lunch break in the library/mall place in Norwich - hard drawing people when they're moving about but yeah, got some stuff done - it's great practice. Girls like boots this time of year and there are lots of fat and old people in norwich, that's my thought for the day.
Had life drawing class tonight, better than last time! Used an easel, which I have never used before, found it more natural - better teacher too, she was very helpful, but unfortunately thursdays class might be cancelled cos there were only 5 of us :( shame cos shes was a wicked teacher, I was so excited about all the stuff she said we'd be doing :( oh well still got my crappy class on tuesday nights I suppose!
gestures in town - about 1-2min each
lol my mum laughed at the size of the child here, i swear she was that small! drawing children is funny, their proportions are hilarious, must do some character designs of smaller folk!
life drawin - about 5mins - we concentrated on measuring and markmaking today, beginners stuff, but I need beginners stuff, I know nothing about life drawing, she gave me a white chalk as well to help. think we're being taught about tone next week!
well did a couple of sketchies in the Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge today, didn't have much time. Cos I've never been before I was mainly looking at all the paintings, lots of great stuff there, lots of Renoir, woo =)
Couple of sculptures, trying out charcoal, getting a bit better but still a freakin huge way to go, it's very difficult i reckon but when you know how it's pretty awesome from what I have seen.
Found some old 3D stuff - this is LOL it was all done back in Maya 4.5, so yeah, 2001 time.
I havn't done 3D for 6 years until a couple months ago. It's so funny looking at it now - I had no idea what composition was, I had no idea about how to use lighting, I knew nothing of colour theory, value etc, I just picked colours I liked etc
I am posting it to kinda have a comparison with this year, so later in the sketchbook - I have a lot of 3D work planned, I just cannot wait to use lighting and colour with some grasp of what they are. Not to mention composition!
90 sec - Using Vilppu method again, kinda funner more flowy but much slowy I needed longer than 90sec, that guy takes about 4min for one gesture.
30sec
Bridgeman, today was all about balance! ooo fun, actually it was kinda, I like bridgeman, cool guy.
2001 - 3D animation lol - this was modelled on my room at Uni - the liverpool posters were not mine! infact none of those were - lol a poster of flick from Neighbours, showin me age =0
2001 - 3D animation - For some reason I liked big anime eyes, I also like erm, Dance Dance Revolution, so I thought I'd combine the two. OMG look at the colours, what were u thinkin alex - the robot blew bubbles and had a cool voice though, like a robot on helium.
2001 - 3D work - Girl I modelled for some project, had her chase a glowing butterfly, aw.
2001 - 3D work - Not sure what I was trying to achieve here, but kinda moved back and forth like a puppet theatre, funnily enough, lighting aint so bad 'ere! still pretty dire animation by all accounts.
2001 - 3D work, k dunno wtf this was, maybe based on my GSCE project "a magical journey" - oh dear, wth is going on with the lighting, I think my uni years were most definitely not well spent.
2001 - 3D work - This was a little path which lead to some mooncats, um less said about that the better :p
2001 - 3D work, friendly neighbourhood monster, LOL @ the textures, lighting sucks - you know at the time I thought all this stuff was OK - I even sent it to some companies; bet they had a right 'ol larf =))) Now I can laugh a long with them hehe.
Watched a lot of tutorials today and studied some art mainly.
I did some posemaniacs also and drew me ol mum watchin TV (well, half asleep), didn't come out well, nevermind, every crap one is one nearer to a good one.
Started on my first forum challend "man and machine" did a quick sketch and then started in Maya. I am going to make it a 2D piece with the mech/tank thing underneath. I will star that tomorrow.

sketch of me mum charcoal, didnt come out well
I tell u nothing in the world as therapeutic as modelling a tank in 3d =0
Hi Alex, Your gesture drawings look great and you definitely should keep doing them. About your figure drawings, I do have a recommendation: instead of just getting the outlines, try to put their volume into consideration. Don't be afraid to close a form.
Hey thanks Yian, yep I am sure I will do gestures everyday, it it also quite therapeutic and relaxing to do some, especially the ones in town on unsuspecting folks =)
I am finding life drawing hard, I will try harder to draw form rather than lines, infact I think the teacher said we're doing form and tone this week :-)
tried to place my tanky thing in some kind of environment before I start painting and adding characters, I like forests and waterfalls so, yeah - it's an idea, think I have done most of my 3D work now I need to go 2D and try some kind of paintover, the image will be completely different I think, dappled sunlight through the canopy maybe, rusty old tank, n stuff
not all shiny and plastic looking, well that's my idea anyway teehee.
