    Voluspa's 2011 WIPs & such thread

Last year I set up a list of 14 things I hoped to accomplish during 2010. I managed to check off 12 of them which isn't bad considering I usually only get halfway through any to-do lists of mine... Anyway, I'm starting this year with a similar list, though somewhat shorter and perhaps less specific...

    Practice areas:
    - Landscapes (not just as backgrounds)
    - Shadows, particularly cast shadows - status: ongoing
    - Using light more efficiently for both compositions and especially mood
    - Continued practice on hands, feet and faces... - status: ongoing (hey, I painted three wrinkly old ladies! that's facial practice for ya)
    - More practice on architecture, cityscapes and such...

    Specific goals:
To paint at least one picture with a prehistoric theme
    - To paint at least one male and one female face each of asian and african people, as practice or in finished pieces... (to avoid the usual caucasian default...) - status: one down, three to go.
    - To paint or draw at least one illustration for a book I've read
    - To make at least one picture for my own pleasure and not related to any challenges or similar
    - To make at least one picture that is "natural" rather than fantasy, e.g. landscape, real life animal or similar... (not prehistoric though!)

We'll see how I do this year. I originally intended goals such as "at least three illustrations of books I've read", but I chickened out Stick out tongue

For the moment, I ought to finish my dragon hatchling from last year, which wasn't quite as polished as I'd like by the end of the challenge, and finish my Athena speed-portrait that I did just before Christmas. It wasn't all that great, I'll have to see if some rimlights or something can save it... Also just before christmas I started some images for my pet lookups and such at Neopets, which I guess I should work on too. I got a little over-ambitious there, I think. But on the other hand it's fun to paint in a completely different style once in a while...

Both because I should practice and because I can't very well let it become february without posting a single wip in this thread, here's a portrait of my sister. I used one of mom's photos for reference and so far I've only painted at 72 dpi (and for 2 hours). I think I might blow it up to 300 dpi to work more on details, but I need to get her nose and mouth right first, I think... Her nose is a tad bit too long at the moment, which means I had too little room for her mouth and in particular - when comparing to the ref - you can tell her teeth are too small... Maybe I'll just start over Stick out tongue

Quite a good portrait Volu. Good colors and light, and good brush use. Really glad you have allowed "harder" edges on some strokes. And study how the Highlights is not 100% white... here actually not even white. And they are still very light.

    Thanks :)
I tried to mimic the palette of the photo without using the eyedropper so much as once! I don't think I've ever used so many different shades for skin in one and the same pic before Stick out tongue

Well, that goes to show how many colors skin actually has. Remember the skin has one color, muscles one, fat one, and blood vessels one, And then there are all the reflections from the surroundings. So to speak of "skin color" is actually pretty stupid. Though having a skin base color is usefull. I have one home made in my oil kit.

Good work and keep it up.

    Thanks everyone Smile
and Wild, I think she actually had a bit of sunburn in the photo Stick out tongue but I like painting "redder" skin because I tend to be too careful and end up with something pasty... I am thinking maybe the green in the back should be somewhat muted though, since it brings out the red even more... Not sure about that Confused

sunburn is evil :( i think we are alll to careful in diffrent ways.  i tend not to go dark enough with shadows a lot of the time.

you can always try it and see if it works :)
