I guess it really depends which platform your game is for, zbrush can certainly be used to create pretty much anything in the right hands, from complex geometric buildings to simple organic shapes, but its not designed for animation.  not all systems rely on the polyframe and bitmap method for creating landscapes or objects anymore either.

    Re: Learning Zbrush

Tried out subtools for the first time today and there certainly a very useful tool! One problem I ran into was this:

I created a body using zspheres then pressed T and worked on the shape followed by selecting the subtool menu and clicked append to select a head I had made previously, this was followed by adding a sphere as an eyeball again by clicking append, I painted a texture onto the body and tried to do the same with the head but the texture wont show up and If I change the material both the head and eye change!

So how do I paint indervidual textures onto subtools and am I adding the subtools in the correct way?

    Re: Learning Zbrush

Make sure you have the subtool you want to paint on selected in the subtool menu. Think of it like Photoshop layers where the active selected one is what you are painting on (same with sculpting too).

If you change the material it will change globally across subtools unless you fill the individual subtool with that matcap first (and it will continue to change every time you choose a different material unless you fill the object - only fill it if you want the mat baked onto the surface). Make sure the subtool is selected in the list, go to the colour menu and click on "fill object". It will fill the object with the material/colour depending on what you have set in the top tool palette (MRGB,RGB,M - MRGB=material and colour, RGB=colour only, M=material only), you can paint with mats the same way.

    Re: Learning Zbrush

Thanks, I've got a lot of learning and study if I am going to even get anywhere near good at this program!

Another question: Is there a way to cut a cylinder shape out of another shape say a sphere as I am trying to figure a way to create a rocket ship with a port hole/window?

Oh and while I think about it I just found a handy way to join two subtools and get rid of the seams!

You can cut parts of the geometry away by masking the area, hiding it, then selecting the "delete hidden" in the geometry tab.

Is it possible to edit the UV's of high poly models created in Zbrush?  Using zbrush or an external programme?

I'm starting to enter a complete minefield of issues I could come across with my current project =P  UV unwrapping being the first =(

Are you asking if (and how) Zbrush can create a UV map internally? Or, are you asking if it's possible to adjust the UV map once Zbrush has created it?

Zbrush can create UV maps but they are really meant for speed and optimizing the texture space they use. If you view the UVs ZB created in another program it will look like a grid of squares and wont make a whole lot of sense (they still render fine in other 3d packages though). You could unwrap your UVs in an external package from an exported version of your lowest subdiv, but unless you really need to do any texture work in Photoshop etc. outside of Zbrush, then I would make do with ZBs UV map.

    Attachment: zbrush-probs.jpg

I was messing with Zbrushes settings and somehow have rearanged the tools Help!

    Problems are

    1. This area now has extra blank space and pushed my canvas down resulting in a smaller working area!

    2. The icons in this area go off the bottom of the screen and I can't access them!

Any idea how to fix these problems?

    Re: Learning Zbrush

If everything has gone wonky, you can restore the default settings but going to the prefs menu and clicking the "Init Zbrush" button. That will set the program right back to it's original startup.

[edit] You should be able to just drag the bottom area of the screen up over the workspace to get at whatever was put there. Then you can plonk it back where it came from.

    Re: Learning Zbrush

I tried your advice and it sadly failed, not your advice, just the fact I am running Zbrush on a netbook with 10" screen LOL. Zbrush runs ok it's just the interface that suffers. (Don't have the problem on my desktop)

I found a workaround though, I moved the tools (by holding alt and clicking) I need into the right hand tool window where I can scroll through them. Huh?Big Smile

    Re: Learning Zbrush

Thanks for the advise about uv's Banjaxedmdt, and on another note its great to see this thread getting used by people other than myself ^^

I'm back with more questions! =P

    1. Does anyone know any good techniques for creating creases and folds?  I've been trying to use reference photographs for clothing but the folds.etc still dont look quite right =(

    2. When combining subtools together using subtool master are there any techniques for hiding/getting rid of the crease marks created by the meshes welding?  I've noticed clay tubes seems good for hiding them but attempting to smooth anything brings them back.

I posted a link (above) that may help with that 2nd question?
