Lethn, it looks to me like your learning to draw anatomy on a tablet?  Just my opinion, but I think it would be best to learn the core parts of anatomy with pencil and paper.  For me at least I can sketch a figure of a much higher quality on paper then a tablet.

Can you tell me what's actually 'wrong' with it though? Is it the way I've defined the muscles? Is it their position? Or is it something more simple like the actual shape?

These are the main bloody things I've been trying to figure out with what's wrong by the way.

instead of trying to tackle the entire body all at once study individual elements such as shoulder then move to upper arm then forearm, so on and so on. Also may I sugetst downloading books by Andrew Loomis. They are free so don't worry about cost (I'm a student so money is always an issue). type his name into google and you should find some downloads.

Another suggestion that helped me was posemaniacs.com.

as for your latest some of the areas that went wrong were the joints along with the breasts. symmetry is off as well. Don't worry this will come (hell you should have seen my earlier work)

Final point - don't give up. it may seem like you have a mountain to climb but that is half the fun. you will get there. Good luck

I think it's finally clicked what I've been doing wrong, it wasn't that I hadn't learned the anatomy or anything, it was much more basic than that I wasn't drawing the muscle shape enough so everything ended up looking awfully flat, now it's just a matter of spending time on it to make it all correct.

This is becoming a regular pattern. You post something, people comment and tell you what you need to do/learn to fix things, improve, and achieve the results that you say you want, you come back later and tell everyone that you've actually worked out what the problem was and that it was nothing to do with what they thought it was, you post more artwork based on your new improved knowledge and understanding... and it's exactly the same as it was before.

You appear to want some quick fix solution that will save you having to actually do any work. There isn't one.

Lol actually it's more the opposite, I come back after awhile realizing it wasn't actually what 'I' thought it was >_< but meh, I'm not here to argue.

Probably a good job too, because you would lose the argument after I quoted the comments from earlier in this thread.

Such frustration is usually the result of the unfamiliarity of human anatomy and the lack of practice. Study anatomy and practice a lot, and use reference when in doubt, and slowly but surely you will improve and find yourself less often in this situation.

The council for the prosecution rests it's case. rolling eyes

Everything. But unless you are willing to face that fact, you will never learn and you will never improve, and I cannot offer any help if you are going to be stubborn.

Meh, sod this, I don't think I'm going to learn this in a year or anything so I I'm going to focus on the 3D now since I've already got a project up and running, I'll guess I'll put the 2D stuff on hold for now.

And freaking hell, I'm not being stubborn lol as for that banjaxedmdt I have learned the anatomy, its freaking burned into my skull right now, but my drawing of it just isn't right so it's clearly something more fundamental than just me not 'learning' enough, I need way more time in order to get this right and I just don't have the time right now.

    Do 3D stuff then.

I am doing! :D will post you up a WIP when I've got something reasonable, I've decided to do something with a ton of reference this time, modelling the Firefly cargo bay.

Firefly cargo bay? So this would be an interior scene? Sounds great!

I read somewhere that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at something. Just a thought.

Exactly, I think it's just that more basic than not learning the anatomy I'm seeing slight improvements but I need way more time, I haven't had the two or three years I've been spending on 3D which is why my 3D looks ten times better lol

Re: Can't take it anymore ( Characters gragghhhhh!! )

I really strongly recommend learning to draw the underlying structure and use a "construction" method when sketching, as it will really help you improve much faster. Right now even with that "anatomy" underdrawing you don't show any understanding of the structure of the body, that's why the anatomy is rubbery and incorrect (the right arm is much longer than it should be). Learning rules for proportions can also help you recognize when things are wrong and correct them. Some examples of these rules are:

-The elbow lines up with the navel/bottom of rib cage

-A person's forearm is generally as long as their foot

-A person's fingers will fall about halfway between waist and knee

Things like this, if kept in mind, can make it much easier to get the proportions right, once you have the underlying skeleton/structure defined.

Re: Can't take it anymore ( Characters gragghhhhh!! )

Thanks for giving a more detailed crit than the others this is the kind of stuff I want :p

I did use a skeleton but I don't think I stuck to it as carefully as I should, what I'll do when I eventually have the time is focus on learning that properly so that I can at least get the proportions and anatomy right.

Right now I'm focusing on the firefly project so that comes first, well that and getting a job lol :D

Re: Can't take it anymore ( Characters gragghhhhh!! )

Okay so I'm studying how to draw skeletons properly again whenever I find doing 3D too tedious, here's what I've got so far.

Would like some proper crit please :)
