    Re: Fightclub Tournament

Here's a bit of a bio for my character.

Nori is tall and slender, being a skilled acrobat and fighter. An expert with Eastern weaponry (and hair-pins) she makes a living as a bountyhunter, mercenary and assassin.

    Character minus kimono:

you see green dots?! - i see a small red x in a box... i wonder which one is Smog?

lol@ character descriptions guys - really makes things more interesting. obviously a good tactic with jester's gonna be draw the fight out so long that he needs to take the suit off during a toilet break. then smack him!

and yes - i realise the numbers dont work out yet... im working on it! lol. and yes - it could mean that we have a 3way preliminary round!

Perhaps a few highest scoring losers progress to the next round?

cool anders - you want her in the gallery robed or otherwise?

i'd thought about a points system like that but knowing the way these things tend to go i think there'd be a lot of tied points..  i'll figure it out when i draw the names. speaking of which... maybe i should do a live broadcast so that ppl know im not rigging it! lol

Hopefully got this figured, think it's cause I had an alpha channel still there (didn't even know you could save a jpeg with an alpha!)

**edit, nope I'm still not seeing it, but hopefully at least you guys can. I'll email it to ya Chris.***

**edit 2, at last it works, think it had saved it as a psd even though it had a jpg extension**

I trust you Stick out tongue

It seems kind of unfair to me somehow if some people end up having to do a threeway battle. It's like they have to do more work but have a lower chance of getting through maybe. How many people do we have now? I've lost track.

I second that. I think there should be a buy instead (two highest ranked people skip the first round). Maybe base the rankings off of previous battle win-loss record?

    Re: Fightclub Tournament

Maybe those who fight in a 3 fighter match could be allowed to pick just one opponent from the 2 available to show in the final piece, that would even out the workload I think?

It might be a good idea to change the thread title to "Fightclub - spectators wanted" now Chris to try to get some more voters interested and let people know they don't have to be a fighter to get involved?

Fightclub Tournament - commencing 1st June.. spectators wanted!

    Currently we have 9 people.

    Evil Robot                      Electro-Bob

    Philby                           Leo

    Anders                          Kusunoki Noriko

    Freakmacattack             The Mech Monk

    Jayhawk                        Veronica’s Nightmare

    Red Ninja                      Serena

    Neeko                           Jester

    Starfox                          Smog

    Chris                             Tellyhead

I'd been asked to hold a place for a friend who hasnt yet got his ifx registration back. and there is potential for one or two others... so any last minute joiners will be accepted up unto a max of 12 people.

the problem with using win/loss records is that not everyone has fought - and even then, different characters have been used. i'll maybe put some previous results together so we can see who the favourites are..

but if there is an uneven number, then we go 3way and use anders suggestion that you are only required to paint vs 1 other character. but yes, statistically anyone in such a round will have worse odds at geting through to the semis..  as far as it being unfair - well thats just how you spin it, you could just as easily say that there is more opportunity to show off your skills and an extra opponent to maim!

OR, another option would be to announce the first batch of preliminary fights immediatley, and not announce the next ones until we have exactly 12 contestants total... that'd keep the numbers round and avoid any of this unfairness talk.

btw, any suggestions how to decide a tied vote?

Re: Fightclub Tournament - commencing 1st June.. spectators wanted!

Chris, great idea... I love watching the fightclub... Can you repost the thread venue link for anyone that's new to stopping by?
I wish I had enough time to participate in this...

How about a paintoff and revote for a tie?
Or another idea for points, like in MMA or Iron Chef, have different categories that people should look for to assign points to.
    For example -
    Creativity -
    Technical difficulty -
    Ring and Crowd control -

Or something along those lines -
    UPDATE:
I'm interested in this, but let me ask - first, could a participant use 3d?
Second, two weeks to the final image?
Third, this is a month long tournament?
Finally (X2), do you have enough people (full card), and could a person still interested enter?

Re: Fightclub Tournament - commencing 1st June.. spectators wanted!

    hey gix!

c'mon  man - you have to join in. Your Goblin assassin would be right at home here!  Yes there's still a couple of spaces.. but im gonna annouce the schedule tomorrow, so please jump in asap!

yup- no problem using 3d. its just that nobody has done this yet... probably cos of the amount of work involved. although if you already have your own character modelled, then you only have to do your opponment during the round.

A round now lasts two weeks (used to be only 1). in this time you must produce 1 final image and post 2 wips in the thread. this is where things are a bit different.. the wips do not have to be towards your final image- they can simply be pictures of  the fight in progress (fips!) - some people have even drawn pages of comic strips of the fight happening - and only posted their final image in its complete form to make it a more surprising 'finishing blow', if you will. But, it is perfectly permissable to post 2 wips then the final version of that image. But the voting crowd can be very fickle...

It is not always the best (what a subjective word) image that wins - if you entertain the crowd with images and banter during the fight, they may be more likely to vote for you. this allows beginners a good chance to compete with the more seasoned artists. and people have won based on their fight rather than the final piece.

this is an elimination tournament - so if we start with 12 contestants, there will be 6 preliminary rounds. The 6 winners from these will compete in 3 semi finals. This will then result in a final featuring 3 fighters.  So, if you keep winning your rounds, you will be fighting in a total of 3x 2week rounds.  hope that makes sense?

doubt i answered everything there, but i think its a good start. will check by later if anyones got more questions.

and let me restate: Gix - sign up! You know you want to!

Re: Fightclub Tournament - commencing 1st June.. spectators wanted!

Well, I'm looking to push myself in Blender, and I'm expecting to use him in some animations in the future, so I guess there's no better way to give him a test drive than to put him in the middle of a battle.  So please add S.Knotbucket, the Goblin Assassin to the fight card.

    Bio:
Not much is known about S. Knotbucket, he's an up and coming Goblin Assassin and from what little in known about him can be derived from a trail of carnage that leads to missing or assassinated persons.  It is believed the S. Knotbucket is part of super secret society of Goblinoid Assassins (which really isn't all that secret since to get to their head quarters you just look in any major phone book).  His current assignment is to kill the King of Dordt, but a flying messenger pigeon pulled him from his assignment to join the IFX Fightclub Tournament, at least that's what he thinks the note said before he ate the bird and asked a local villager to read him the note.  He's really not even sure the message was for him, he just knows the bird tasted rather "yummy".

    Stats:
Wins/Losses: Unknown, Goblins can't really count, but the number is somewhere between 0 (the number of passed spelling tests) and 12
    Height: 3.5 - 4 feet tall
    Weight: 75 lbs

Quick question, will there be different WIP threads for each of the ongoing battles?

Yay! reeling them in like kippers!

S Knotbucket - lol. great character desc too - think this guys gonna be a lot of fun! and i cant wait to see some of the other fighters in 3D too.

yes - different threads for each fight otherwise things would just get too messy.

ok - so theres only 1 official place left on the roster right now.  Any takers?   people could always put their names down as backup incase anybody cant participate at the last minute..

Different Threads... Definitely a good thing.
I'm a little worried that I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but I'm excited.  Nothing like speed modeling and rigging characters in 3d.  I'll post technical WIPs in my website/blog, so if anyone is interested can see my workflow.  So will the fight card be posted in this thread?

    Attachment: round structure.jpg

right, time to start getting the ball rolling. i will do my best to keep the entire process clean, open and black&white from the outset so there can be no room for awkward rulings down the line  (which i feel is especially important as i am taking part too - dont want to be seen to be biased)

So, it looks like we're gonna go with a spread of 12 fighters. (there is still 1 free place and i am waiting on 1 confirmation - but im confident these can be filled in time).  Check out the diagram below to see how the fights will be organised.

Preliminary rounds 1-3 will be announced tonight and take place june1 - june14th. prelim rounds 4-6 will be announce on june 14th and take place june 15th - june 28th.  Voting on each round will be open for 2 days. These rounds are voted on separately and in each round people vote only the winner. This will give us 6 semi finalists.

Semi finals will be known whe votes are tallied. The rounds will take place July 1st - july 14th. Voting on this round will be open for 2 days. This will produce 3 finalists

The final. This is a 3way round and each contestant must produce 1 final image featuring all 3 contestants. This round will take place 18th july - 31st july. Voting will be open for 1 week using the 3 tier system.

    any questions yet?
