    Strike a pose - Warren Louw - Issue 49

I jumped up and down for joy (literally) when I saw this workshop this month. I am currently working on a commission that involved drawing a pose that kept coming off as stiff and I could not get my head round it at all. Warrens advice could not have been better timed. I have never been able to sketch poses confidently and now thanks to this easy to understand wisdom I can - YAY!

Anyhow now for the problem. Unfortunately said pose is really awkward with her both bending AND twisting mid torso and me then adding complicated underwear.... The photo attached is the girl who the commission is for so that you can see her proportions but I felt she looked quite squashed and awkward so I have tried to get her to be stretched out a bit more and arching her back a bit plus moved her hand round to the hip to make it sexier. The line art is where I am up to now. I know the hair is horrible but it was just as a guide because I will only be using this as a guide when I draw/paint it traditionally

I am really struggling with her torso and breasts mostly. She just seems too broad (?) and where on earth does her right/top thigh end and her torso start. Please any help or comments would be very welcome

    Thanks in advance

Oooo just realised that her left calf is too thick. Will correct that tomorrow :-)

I reckon you are well on the way Bezfaery.  Altering the angle of that leg up works for me.  I reckon all you need to do is try and find the imaginary curves that some describe as the 'line of action through the body' and accentuate it  more.  The main one tends to follow the curve of the spine and through into the legs.  If you then relax and open up the shoulders in a more confident way, that might help too?  I did a quick idea of what I mean over the original photo, but I've not made the best job of it.

Thank you for your speedy response Nickillus.

Ah yes I see what you mean about the shoulders particularly. Not sure how to execute it but I will give it a go later today. So do you think her trunk and chest look to be in proportion?

    Thanks again

Now be honest Sam.  You were always a sucker for a pretty face!  Tsk, tsk.

Hey Faye - There was nothing obviously out of proportion as far as I could see.  Not in the context of the pose leastways.

Cool thanks Nickillus....although your last statement has me worried now....does that mean something that isn't in context to the pose is out of proportion??? *laughs nervously* (just slap me if I'm being paranoid)

Sam - sorry to disappoint - I just meant I wanted help in relation to his workshop

No-no-no-no-no.  Nuffink wrong.  Sorry.  I didn't mean to sound cryptic Faye.  Bad use of language.  So unlike me - cough.

Or yes - the rhubarb looks too small.  And is out of context.  Hope that helps.

Yes it is cetriya. Incredibly useful though and I would have thought it would be helpful for all figure drawing. He explains everything in a really easy to understand fashion

    About the artical:

I found the construction method with all the little circles really helpfull, it's the first time I have seen that one, but it's only shown properly on the front view, does anyone know where I can find more on this method, or is there any chance of getting an article explaining it further?
