    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Happy new Year guys! Thanks for the everyone comments, critiques, advice, encouragement and general freaking cool awesome friendiness since I made this SB 1 year ago.

Special thanks to Chee for taking the time out of his mental schedule (as I imagine it!) to give me some great advice and most importantly getting me started, who knows I might have been overwhelmed and given up if I wasn't introduced to the fundamentals in the most intuitive way - so thanks bud!! Hopefully one day I can repay the favour :)

I hope everyone had a good 2009, and lets show the world we mean business in 2010!!:)

Undercover72 - lol no idea if they're 'break' or 'street' dancers - I think they were just a bunch gathered for a photoshoot rather than the real thing! Great to draw though.

Pretty pathetic update here, I took a week off, naughty I know - but I had a lot of things I wanted to do before getting back into mega art-mode. Last night I completed a quick Photoshop sketch to get back into the swing of things.

Photo study, about 1h - yeah I could have done better and sharper leaves.

Speed painting based on a tutorial (Digital Painting Techniques book)

Personal work, someone on a forum I use requested a "Dandelion" as part of a daily sketch group, so here's my contribution. Btw, this is more the style I am aiming for, it's more cartoony than I would like but I only did it in a couple hours - as for colours and feel, this is getting closer to my heart.

wow I absolutely love your latest. I think you should start submitting to the mag now. I do think the nostrils need a slight bit more contrast but still You should start sending your work to be put in the mag!

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Congratulations on your milestone Alex, and the latest are just beautiful.

I like the depth of the trees and the colours and the light airiness of the dandelion pic. I am in awe of your anatomy skills too. You have worked really hard this past year and your improvement has been outstanding, (not that you weren't good before).

Here's hoping you have a great 2010 Alex

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

oh just a minor suggestion. I love the dark feel to your mad hatter type piece, but when I first saw it I thought that there was a dead fragmented dog on the table having his innards read * sigh - I know, I should see a psychiatrist, lol*  having looked again (and seen your earlier posts) I see he is merely drunk - "he's alive!! " reason probably that his coat is too similar to the background  (didn't see it) so you don't get the full benefit of that sweeping arm leading your view. If you intend on having it so similar you should add a little more shadow /highlight along the leading edge to define it  imo, just a suggestion. You were probs going to do something similar anyway.

Having said that, it might just be my monitor/ eyes

love the expression on your characters' faces and the hair texture. It has definitely got atmosphere. Yes
