    Re: Jobs

heres a few, there are loads out there, just do a search in google and it will come up with shed loads.  the jobs on DA tend to be poorly paid, however sometimes good work comes up too.

the jobs on mandy .com are specifically film related, you can also search specifically for paid or other work, its not limited to art either.

CG hub often has some very good jobs going, but they are mostly full employment not freelance or part time, though there are exceptions.

Its not easy getting in touch with the right person/company who could use you... I think a devoted page/forum discussing upcoming projects - seperated from all other forums would be a good solution?

finding contacts is always hard, often you just have to be in the right place at the right time...

I think your right in that discussion of projects is good. there are loads of people with projects they expect to make loads of money, few ever do of course.. DA has a section dedictated to projects, I think its a good section.  but I do feel thats different from advertising jobs.

the big problem for most projects is bankroll, what we really need is a site that brings creative genius incontact with financiers...

    Re: Jobs

This is just my opinion but I rather not have a forum for jobs. It's nice to have a forum that is not just about money just a transfer of information. Besides you would be better of pursuing jobs you want than random fly-by night posts by people that don't have anymore connections to mainstream media than you do. If you really want to pursue a job you need to network, find out about the companies that put out material the that you like (publishers, studios) and find out what they are looking for (portfolio requirements, work flow requirements, programs) and the biggest make connections build a relationship, jobs might come to you by posting a gallery but I would doubt that you are going to get to where you want to be by standing on the sidelines.

Sort of off the subject (this part isn't necessarily for you Solomon01 but to anybody that wants to do freelance but hasn't had any experience)

. To anyone that wants to pursue freelance work make sure you have a game plan or you are looking to be mistreated, a percentage of people will try to take advantage consciously and unconsciously (not pay, overwork for what your getting paid, and have unrealistic expectations). If you set expectations you and your customers will be a lot happier make sure you protect yourself and your work. First, know how much you would charge as a base, price hourly, and what you would charge if the customer wants a rework. Second, you need to state whether your are selling the piece itself or permission to use the piece and in what context/media the piece is authorized for use. Lastly, since this is about money you better get a percentage up front (this weeds out the people that aren't serious and rip off artists, 20% seems to be a normal amount) have a contract that states all the above and sets an expectation date of payment that is agreed upon by you and the customer after the piece is done.  Luckily I haven't been ripped off in the few projects that I've done ( I haven't delved in professionally, but I have taken some paying jobs by referral)  I'm not trying to dissuade freelance it can be great but bottom line you need to know what to expect and set expectations for clients to be successful.

    Re: Jobs

i look at a blog for hints and tips about the buisness side of art, it goes into contracts, bank accounts, networking amongs other things, i find it pretty useful to read http://www.artofbusinessblog.com/

blogs can be a brilliant resource for learning, so i'd suggest reading them, imagine fx recommends blogs all the time and i actually looked at this one http://artorder.blogspot.com/ he even comments on the success stories because people take part in challenges on there. so blogs can be a good way to get info and advice too :)

i havent started selling my work yet, and while yes i do want to know where to find work (i want to be an illustrator) i do think a jobs advertising forum here would ruin the community. i come here to get advice, and the amount of come do this piece of work for me for free i see on other art sites is depressing.  i think what would be better would be for us to get together and point eachother in the right direction of where to go.

i did a film and telivision production couse sadly i am not intrested in working on films anymore and decided that illuatration is more my thing but that doesnt mean that i cant share any info about the film industry i have picked up on the way(some of these are for games to so take a look at them) online daterbases such as mandy as fates fickle said are a good place for film work, media jobs websites such as talentcircle, shooting people and grapevinejobs can also be found here http://www.screenyorkshire.co.uk/links/media-jobs take a look :)

i've done work with screen yorkshire - a regional screen agency (it was a training program called caught short focus i belive) http://www.screenyorkshire.co.uk/about-us/ where i worked on a short film called the reading room (i edited it) many screen agences have a crew daterbase for people looking for crew to work on there films etc. i'm asuming that people go there to look for concept artists too its worth a look there are many other regional screen agenceys too http://www.screenyorkshire.co.uk/links/regional-screen-agencies i cant say because working on films for three years really put me off working in art departments etc.and at uni i was concentrating on getting the course done not extra work but its worth a look ^^

now if someone can point me in the right direction for illustration ...

Oh wow. Lot's of good stuff came out of this post *wipes froth off the corner of  his mouth*Wink

I guess we're not having a jobs section in here (and frankly if it was going to be appropriately included, it would've been here long before I came alongHmm)

Anyway, a lot of these links look pretty interesting, so I'll go have a looksee. Geeked

    Re: Jobs

I think a job section is a brilliant idea.  Or at least a space on these forums for "artists looking for work".  ConceptArt.org has one of those and its where I end up getting 80% of my work that keeps me working full time on freelance stuff all year.

So yeah.  I am in full support of more resources for artists.  Since people might come here in hopes of posting a job or getting an artist but they may not want to dive into the chaos that is the gallery section.

It would be nice to have a place where artists can post a few samples and links to how to get a hold of them and are able to bump there thread up when they are looking for work, something more direct and up to date.

I really don't think one new section to the forum area is going to be a huge problem is it?  If it is I am sure it wouldn't be much to get another moderator on.  Heck I would volunteer to keep an eye on it.  I'm sure there are a lot of people who would want to volunteer to help out these forums.

But people have problems with change.  So even though I think it would be a great way to help the artistic community.  People are generally going to "Bo" all over a change to their forum area.

I think its important to help young talent and freelancers alike.  Even just a section where job related links or links to design sites that offer jobs would be good.  Like the “Artist Resources” section or something.

I am 100% in support of your suggestion solomon01.  In fact I think I myself brought the subject up on these forums once before.  The more people that keep asking for it... and the more chance of it happening.Yes
