Re: A Titanic, wip for IFX cover competition

edart: i like your polar bear :), i like the bright red ship more then the saturated one too, the saturated ship doesnt looks as reflective and shiny like it did before

to gier more infor regarding the contest

    voluspa:

The only brief is to make a cover image, no theme or other such info. A template for where text goes and all is included on the DVD but you can see it in clairbears entry image as well, if you wanna start before you get the issue. It's not too different from the Xmas one, except there's more are covered by text...

Contest entries need to be in by Jan 10th and you can win, besides cover spot, a wacom cintiq and a year's subscription. I wish I stood a chance :P

theres this info on the DVD also pretty standerd stuff but it might come in useful :D

    Dear ImagineFX artists

Points to consider for cover images:

    • Template is RGB at 72 dpi. The final image should be RGB at 300dpi.
    • Conversion to CMYK should be considered but NOT applied to the final image.
    • PSD files are preferable.
    • Bleed is 5mm around all edges. Bleed is to allow for minor adjustments in composition and compensates for trim.
    • The top area of the magazine is the most visible on the newsstand – this is where the focus of the image should be.
    • Images can interact with the ImagineFX logotype – but should not cover most of the logo.
    • High contrast images help focus the viewers eye.
    • Lighter images are preferable.
    • Signature colour on template is placeholder ONLY.

A few more pointers: When choosing a topic to paint, remember that we are a fantasy and sci-fi magazine and the subject of your image should reflect that. Also, your image needs to stand out on the newsstand, so consider your colour palette, where your focal points of your image are, and how they might interact with text on the cover. Oh, and no nudity please... other than that, have fun and good luck!

so year thats the info on the dvd hope it helps :)

yeah well its pretty fustrating not knowing what something is when several people are talking about it or even drawing for it,  i'm suprised no one has put a tread up for it. i hope they have an official this is this compation thread and wip thread, it would be nice to see everyones entries in one place developing along side each other :D  i'm gonna enter it to even though i dont stand much of a chance but hey it should be fun besides i want to be an illustrator and practicing cover art will be a good thing XD

Re: A Titanic, wip for IFX cover competition

ok, seeing the slightly desaturated more reflective ship I'm inclined to go against my own idea and agree with gier and volupsa XD (don't hit me lol, it was just an idea) Don't go the silvery route, stick with the more saturated version :)

The polar bear is really looking nice, I do wonder if he could use just a touch more fur behind his head though now i've seen the whole piece without the template over the top. Coming along great :D

a couple of suggestions on this one the first is to put some of the water color on the belly of the ship and underneath the wings since light is reflected from all the surfaces and bounce all over it will also add some intrest since it's the cold reflection and the warm color of the ship

second you should do the fur of the bear more smooth and less individual hair strings you can see three examples here

the bear actually reminds me of the polar bear from the Coca-Cola ads.  especially with what looks like a can in his hand. Stick out tongue

thanks for the extra info on the contest too. is there a specific topic? or is it 'A Titanic'? or is it an open concept? hmmm......

Can I ask where you got the template from ed? I want to start work on my idea but I kinda need the dimensions and what not to make sure part aren't hid behind the title and things. There's no publicity about it on the site yet, I wouldn't have know there was even a comp. going on unless I checked out this thread :(
