There was a very good tutorial that really got me started at blenderart.org, issue 9, modeling a low poly space craft.
I use that method to block out most of my sculpts, then use the subsurf modifier, then switch to sculpt mode, and add multiers when necessary.
Zoom in and out with the middle mouse scroll wheel.
In edit and in object mode here are a couple of useful keystrokes (keep one hand on the mouse and the other on the keyboard)
Rotate: r
scale: s
Grab: g
extrude: e (edit mode only)
You can limit movement on the various axises by pressing x, y, or z
