nice work, only thing I can suggest is that frodo should stop poseing and destroy the ring lol. I cant see anything wrong with the portrait.

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook

Hey thanks Phoeni and Emilia :) More anatomy stuff today I'm afraid, got a feeling this will be a while, mainly studying head, then onto body.

Loomis study, though I've also been watching Glenn Vilppu on drawing the head, similar ideas, all about 'da bones. Points to looks for with regards to head tilting, ears related to the browline etc.

My once a week posemaniacs -

    10sec

    15sec

    30sec

    60sec

    90sec

Sketchstorm daily challenge, prefer it to daily sketch group as I like being giving a subject ^^

Fir tree - made it up, prob doesn't look like one.

Tom Cruise - has my loomis practice paid off? Well, a little i think.

My Next Artist study, I chose something more modern, it's a study of a drawing by Akihiro Yamada - was browsing artists on my hard drive, and well he was "A"

Drew in pencil scanned then redid lines in photoshop - added texture, colour etc.

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook

Thanks dudes, yeah Phoeni, the prob with these well known people you need to get it just right or it just looks plain wrong!! The symmetry probably is a little off but there's lots else off too :s next time i'll use the mirror to check :)

Been ill, again!! So took a couple days off, so boring but didn't have the energy to draw, feeling better now, infact was up in bed drawing til 7am this morning, just doodling out of my head - sleeps all messed up, argh >.<

So here's some stuff from Sunday before I got ill somehow :s

    Loomis!

And a new piece I'm working on, started off with a photo ref, who knows where it'll go, probably just a piece of line-art, to go with my artist study this week.

Ok so all these doodles were done between 3-7am this morning as I can't sleep - turned out it was great practice drawing from memory and possible got some ideas to develope, though it is all a bit of a mess :s

Ok so I need some male torso practice, lol.

Some pose ideas for some characters I want to create.

    Dunno really.

    Some freaky stuff.

A fight scene composition idea I am planning to illustrate.

Some other odd stuff which ended up in the sketchpad.

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook

stealing my scribbleing style. I kill you!!!!!!

actually the scribbles look great. sorry you have been ill. I know how that feels. Glad to see it hasn't harmed your drawing skillz.

As a suggestion try the scribble tech which you have used and apply it to the water colour figures you done a while back.

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook

Hey you should be flattered I steal such an awesome stylee :)

I actually find it quite liberating; freed from the shackles of references and study, just go wild with imagination - though I'll take your tip and try adding some new media, I actually did it all with a crappy old blunt pencil and no sharpener/rubber :s Next time I'll be armed with some better stuff, watercolour sounds fun, though possibly a bit messy for drawing in bed^^

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook

nice head studies. don't be afraid to draw through your forms though and break it down, it might be messier but you'll understand more what's going on in the neck and stuff.

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

I've just joined IFX to say what a great and inspirational sketchbook you have here, love the images laid out on the floor. I already knew about posemaniacs from my art lecturer but damn you really took it to the next level. :D

     Thanks for the inspiration....

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

    Good tip thx Emily^^

Gdsworld - Yeah those poses were useful; though I think I'm done with posemaniacs for now - was a good learning tool but you gotta remember, they're just Daz 3d models not real people! It's definitely helped with with proportions though I can spot if stuff is out on other peoples drawings pretty easily - though I still make mistakes myself lol.

Ok update time - last week I was ill all week :( Spent most of the time in bed - I did some marker pen ideas in bed - could get much done >< was hard drawing just a face - came up with some randomness, no ref.

Some kind of water witches, only cos I heard the name in Coraline!

Some other stuff, dunno really - I've never drawn with colour before - was fun messing about.

Well as I said couple weeks back I want to draw heads - so I carried on with Loomis book.

Looking at planes of the head.

Loomis recommended memorizing this by re-doing them with not looking - so I re-did them - 11 times so far, first 10 were in a row - almost got it. Coloured bits are corrections, I checked after each drawing.

Actually did this one a couple days later. Prob do memory stuff everyday now.

    More loomis head book -

Loomis said to look at faces and mark out the points we've been studying, so here I go -

Next Loomis recommends doing some ideas from memory - placing the features and bones in different places -

So here are some guys I came up with from my head - placing the mark points in different proportions -

Tried rendering one quickly - looks like crap so far - I will start again.

Crimson Daggers art group - joined this art group on conceptart.org - Run by MrDelicious - 9am EST everyday for an hour - we do tasks etc, it's only been running a few days - I joined yesterday and am trying to catch up with the previous days atm.

Yesterday was Still life - I tried an Apple

First thing I've ever painted from life, photoshop, about 40min.

Friday was Loomis from the book and then from memory -

    Ref -

    No Ref -

Next I am trying another still life - it's so freaking hard, I'm going to do still lifes all week - got a nice space and light setup on my desk now for objects :)

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

so much work. even when you are ill. Just a thought but have you tried studying different art styles like Art deco, Abstract expresionalism, etc and applying them to your work? just a thought

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Heh well I'm actually human and didn't work when I was ill - most of these were over the weekend when I was feelin all goood :)

Yeah I have thought of trying different styles - I have banks and banks of artwork I've collected last month, just finding the time to do studies and learn from them - gonna try a bit everyday! Main goal is painting from life right now, realistically... hopefully heh. That apple suxor and I hope it's my worst still life I ever do!!

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Quick update before I start my epic still life which I predict is gonna take all week lol.

    First Crimson Daggers assignment -

Take photos and draw over the muscles using Loomis as a reference -

Next take photos and draw over the muscles with no reference -

    Was a great exercise!!

Did some quick few min sketches from Yoga pictures this morning -

Afterward and drew in the kitchen from memory -

Messed about with the warrior in photoshop, tried to fix the arm a bit - think of doing this sketch as proper painting (starting over of course)
