Voluspa i know a lot of you don't know who Kelly Freas was, But in the 50s, 60s and 70s the man covered the field of science fiction and fantasy. he did covers for DAW books, all the science fiction magazines of the time, album covers, NASA . all done in traditional medium and the man could make his work look like it was airbrushed without using one. Pretty nifty trick.

    Re: Top 50 influencial Artists

I was under the impression that the Top 50 list was based around artists that had been featured in the past 50 issues of the magazine. So some very influential artists are bound to be excluded because they haven't been featured yet.

that would definitely leave out a lot of great artists. ; ) I have yet to see Luis Royo or a feature on Luis Royo in the magazine. 'le sigh'....who knows....maybe, just maybe someday.....

Well, I don't know for certain that's what it was, but that's my interpretation of the introduction to the list.

I was thinking of getting a book of his art work... he is a dude right? Anyone know if there is a stand out book? There seem to be many to choose from and unlike the book shop I can't flick through them on the interweb of wonder.... sigh.

His first name is Luis, so I pretty sure it's a guy unless its a
    pseudonym.

Although I wouldn't necessarily call him influential as such I am still suprised how little Dorian Cleavenger is (or isn't) mentioned on here.

tons of great books there Harlequin. take a look at his site. I especially like his Concepts series of books which is made up of just sketches. Dark Secrets is also a really good book. It was the one that got me hooked on him. now I notice his artwork on book covers all the time.

one thing that really sucks about having moved recently. my subscription still goes to the ex-landlords. so I only really get my mail once a week and still haven't gotten my issue 50. hopefully it's there Friday when I go get my mail. : P

Nope Banj, just the top 50 that are still alive that came to us after a massive thrash out and brain storm. Not sure where you got that idea!

Hmm, in that case being a list of the most inspirational sci-fi/fantasy artists of all time I'd have to agree with what others have said about there being some strange inclusions/omissions.

My impression came from the way the intro was worded, it starts by saying that during the past 50 issues you have encountered some of the best artists in existence, then says here's a list of our favourites. That, along with some of the artists in and out of the lists, lead me to believe you were just listing favourites from those mentioned in the mag.thinking

[edit] Mind you, if you say they still have to be alive, that kind of chucks out some that I would have included.

Like Rembrandt! :P (I'm perfectly convinced he'd have been a fantasy artist had he been working today)

    Re: Top 50 influencial Artists

I was actually thinking of more recent artists Stick out tongue, having said that, I think Bosch would be in there too.
