    Biomechanical techniques

Is there anyone around here who could do a workshop on Giger's Biomechanical style, I love his work and want to learn that particular style so I can involve it in my own art.

There was a tutorial in an issue of ImagineFX, but in my opinion the end result didn't have a great deal in common with Giger's work. I think you would be better off getting hold of a load of his books and just studying his artwork.

    Re: Biomechanical techniques

i second banjaxedmdt. Incidentaly there is a new Geiger book out which i plan on purchasing. I love Geiger & am currently trying out Geigery art.  here's what i've found rendering wise. Build up lots of transparent shadow layres with the airbrush to get a polished look & use colour dodge (if u use photoshop that is) at a very (2-8%)low opacity & build up highlights. Also take a peek at anatomy books - the bone structure diagrams are great for coming up with ideas/combos. also make a colour pallette of dark browns,greys,grey-greens,grey-yellows,grey-blues and other dank colours. On my recent piece, I did the image in black & white first & then used an overlay & soft light layer at low opacity to add colour to areas. Then slowly building these up. Oh & looking at car parts (or my boyfriend's motorbike mags) helps.

    Hope that helps :D

    I love Geiger

But not enough to spell his name correctly.

I've got a couple of books of his art, and I seem to remember there being a progress piece in one of them. I'll need to look them out and check on that.

A more obvious design intepretation is Phallic +++ throw in bits and pieces of spine/hirst = Giger

Someone doing a tutorial of on someone elses style... seems a bit odd to me. And especially with a significant and characteristic artist as Giger. I would just recommend studying his paintings and the surrealistic idea in general. And of course allowing yourself to go bonkers.

I'll try and remember to have a look tonight - it's either the one about the making of Alien or one that Taschen put out many moons ago.

I think you might be talking about the ARH+ book by Taschen. It has a page with about half a dozen steps on it.

I can't find anything else along the same lines in any of the other books I have. There's photos of him working and so on but nothing showing a step by step run through like the ARH+ one.

I recommend getting the books from Taschen for anyone wanting to see a wide range of Giger's work. I bought another one a couple of days before this discussion started ("www HR Giger com" - name of book, not me listing his website), it has loads of interesting stuff in it.
