    Clairebear's (meirou's) wip place.

Hi all, I'm looking for crit on my newest digi painting of the disney princess, Aurora. Last time I drew Ariel which I was pretty pleased with (here; http://meirou.deviantart.com/art/Ariel-and-Flounder-irl-120588501) this time around, the drawing looks very static and lifeless. The idea is birds will be perched on her should and flying around her, but I dunno. I feel it lacks something the ariel painting has. Any suggestions? :)

btw the contrast and brightness may be abit messed up. I'm doing it on my laptop and when I finish, I adjust the brightness on the computer.:P

    Re: Aurora wip

hey claire - nothing leaps out at me right away other than her nose and mouth are looking really good and the shape of her hair/face is looking good to - looking forward to see some more details on it.  the bird on her shoulder sounds like a nice touch, but i think you would need to bring in several more elements from the film for people to realise it is a disney princess as right now (bearing in mind she is in sketch/basic stage lol) she just looks like a very pretty girl.  just keep the updates coming!

also - just tried going to the previous image you did on the link provided and it's saying file not found - could you try linking again please? :)

    Re: Aurora wip

Thanks! The thing is there wasn't many elements I could think of that would make her "Aurora." I dont know what other props I could include. XD I'm not too keen on her face shape. My boyfriend said she looks like Lady Gaga and well..that wasn't really the look I was going for!

here's the link again..not sure how to make it a hyperlink. hopefully it works. :)

    Re: Aurora wip

thanks for the link again - what a stunning ariel!  i wouldn't worry what the boyfriend says, guys will probably be seeing lady gaga in anything blond for a while now....if you gave her buck teeth and weird eye make up he might have a point, but i really don't see it.  looking at your previous image if you hadn't listed it as ariel and flounder i wouldn't have immediately made the connection - i would have just thought it a really good image on its own merit! i do remember there was a section in the film where she was singing in a garden to all the birds and fish (i think) -maybe you could work a lot of those background details in?  failing that wasn't she wearing some sort of shell necklace?  i'd be tempted to go with something like or  the huuuuuge blue bow she wears as a human.

    Sleeping Beauty

Now that's what I call a solid foundation! I can't wait to see how this one turns out...

You mentioned earlier that you weren't sure what else to include for context. Well it seems to me that any self respecting portrait of Princess Aurora should probably have a spinning wheel or at least a spindle, no? But honestly, I don't care who the picture is about as long as it ends up looking like I think it will

    Re: Aurora wip

    thanks everyone Smile

alx, great suggestion! I'll definately unclude the wheel or something like that. :D

here's a new piece I'm working on. its going to be like a yin and yang concept (i know, not very original but oh well.) Its going to be in a foresty kinda place, very Linda Bergkvist inspired! I want to include as much life into the piece as possible, like flowers, butterflies, birds, snakes, etc. If anyone has any suggestions, that'd be great. ^^

(ignore the eye, it's not done..well..nothing is really. XD )

    All things move by Dao...

...and the Dao moves all things. I don't know why you thing yin/yang is a tired concept... Actually it is a universal concept so it should always be fresh. In a very real way, every good painting that has ever been done is about yin/yang on some level. Even if that weren't the case, you have a solid foundation so why not run with it?

Having said that, let me praise the way you render lips- outstanding work! Every artist has their own order of operation and I've traditionally saved the mouth for much later in the process. I'm going on the record as rethinking my old approach in favor of yours. One of the many pages I hope to steal from your playbook...

Can't wait to see where you go with these!

Re: All things move by Dao...

    thanks you two. :)

alx- I find it easier to start with the nose and mouth, because if they look good then it inspires me to finish it. I think its a good way of working. you may notice I try to make them as realistic as possible, then I dont need to go overboard with the rest of the details if I get lazyDevil

Arghhhh I've had a disaster. I resized my yin and yang thing so it was small, to see what the face would look like. its like 1000 pixels width. Stupidly I saved it, the original had a width of 6000 pixels. now the face looks all blurred.  [:'(]

    STBY

Any chance you can unerase the file or revert to a previous version? Yeah, folks mock me for having at least a dozen versions of the same file in various states of completion, but I've clobbered enough files to know that is a safe way to get things done
