    Gregs Sketchbook

Hi, my name is Greg Thomas and im currently studying Illustration at Swansea Met. University. Im in my first year and up until a couple of weeks ago only ever used traditional methods of producing work. After researching a potential career path I discovered that the majority of work that my favourite illustrators were doing was digitally created. So now i've decided to try and learn how to create digital art, id appreciate any helpful tips and comments but please remember I am completely new when it comes to using photoshop so be nice as i understand my work is probably full of errors! My regular email address is below if anyone needs to contact me. Thanks.

I quite like graffiti so i scanned in a sketch from my sketchbook and used it as a brush tool which i layered to create this image

You've certainly got a good eye. Those messabouts are really stylish. My advice is to get hold of a good stylus and tablet and get painting. That's if you haven't got one already! Also have a go at the challenges, especially the Daily sketch challenge. You can learn such a lot by participating.

Finally this is my first ever illustration which i colored using photoshop which is the start of a children's comic. Im still not confident to do the line work digitally yet but the main outlines were scanned in after penning them out. There is probably loooads wrong with the coloring but as i said this was my first attempt. This was done with a mouse before i got my tablet. Wrist was dead for awhile! If anyone can give any advice how to thicken and darken scanned in lines quickly then that would be much appreciated!

Thanks a lot. Just bought a small wacom bamboo tablet and its been so much easier than a mouse and quite affordable too. Not sure if the expensive models are any better or if u are just payin for the size but should the need for a better one ever arise i might consider investing in a more expensive model.

I use a Wacom Intuos A5, tablet and it's just right for my desk space. I'm not sure whether or not a larger one would benefit me either. One thing is for sure, I couldn't do without it now.

My second creation using photoshop. Think the colouring is a bit better than my first attempt. once again any constructive critism is welcome!

Good stuff man, great potential and a nice start.

Watch your saturation levels though, a couple days colour theory study and it's use in art would help you tonnes! Richard Keys Gnomon dvd explains it well if you've got spare cash =)

yeh good advice, to be honest i've learnt a hell of a lot just from 3 issues of imagine fx than i ever did in college, the lectures never seem to want to show you different techniques or actually how to improve your own work. so i might actually invest in those dvds to help my progression. plus the advice iv seen so far in the forum is top notch.  thanks for taking the time to look at my work
