    Valkyrie and horse

    Hello.

This is my first post. I have tried to create a realistic Valkiria without any fantastic ornament. Only the relation between the woman and his horse (inspired by real viking horses race). The first idea was show the horsehair and the braids of the women moved by the snowstorm. Freeze the moment in which begins to snow and the women protects his horse. All the work was done in Photoshop

Any coment and critic are welcome.

    Thanks!

    :^)

    welcome!

I like idea. you have done nice work with her but I think she is a bit cold...naked during blizzard;) Only thing is I would put both reins to make her more supported on them.

Could you explain more about real viking horses race. I was sure they used icelandic horses or fjords, which are rather small, that one looks big.

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

Very beautiful and well-painted image ! But how cold she must be...brrr...As a swede I feel entitled to nitpic viking-inspired images and I must point out that her helmet is a bronze-age ceremonial helmet and her shield looks more mediteran than scandinavian...But she is an Valkyria after all...A divine entity who probably don´t mind the cold and uses whatever equipment she pleases...Don´t mind my remarks, I just love to show off what I belive I know about vikings ! Wink

Viking-age depiction of valkyrias usually show them very well clad b.t.w.

But as I have written: both the girl and the horse is very beautifully painted, it is a pleasure to look at this image ! Yes

(Wish I could paint like that !)

She is very well painted and so is her horse, however I think her breastplate (for lack of another word) is at the wrong angle and looks to three dimentional.

But as I said first very well painted!Yes

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

beautifully painted, but i think there's an issue with her bum, if you follow the line up from her left thigh, her bum would be pretty high & big, I also find it a little cluttered, with too much to look at but nothing attracting the eye, apart from her thigh.

however, i've been wrong many times, and this could be another! lol, seriously well painted though and the horses mane is just supreme.

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

Agree with alot of the previous.

The horse looks especially wonderful but the woman's anatomy looks off.

Her nearest thigh is thinner than the other and her lower half is twisting at completely at odds to the top half.

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

Yes beautiful painting but watch that anatomy....it seems to me that her torso is too long and thick for the rest of body.

And just for future reference....her is the female form of his....used when gender is specific. And it's alright because yes I realize that english is most likely not even a second language for you. Smile

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

Basill: you are right, the icelandic horses are small. When I made the concept, I look this horses at internet and fix in my mind their horsehair moved by snow; then i forget the size because the composition was right for me... I was thinking all the time at the horsehair and the red braids of the valkyrie...

    braids detail

Raimo: All people said the same thing about the cold she feel, but I like she in this way. Big Smile  The helmet and breast disks were found at pages about scandinavian art and armours. The disks are contemporary and the helmet (as you said) was old.

edart: I hadn't noticed about the angle of breastplates. You're right that looks more three dimentional that the girl's chest.

kazky: You're right also abotu this "little" anatomy mistake. :^(    As I said, I was concentrated in excess at the horsehair, braids and global ilumination...

penabled: You're right also about the anatomy... and of course about my english grammar. Sorry.

Thank you all, because I realized I have to look all details to achieve a more perfect image.

I am sure that the next will have fewer defects and we like it at all.
    Cheers!

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

I don't mind the big horse at all. Small horses would be boring! You want a bog horse with horns and breath fire... or just a big horse.

Other the her bum, I have also noticed that her kneecap is missing, too. Good job on everything else!

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

On your picture, that kind of horse suit much better that small one. So you do not have to worry at all. and its hair looks awesom.

Just remember that the things that have been pointed out are ways of improving the painting, they don't make the painting bad as it is a quality painting but with some changes would be truly excellent.

Maybe she travelled far and wide, she is bringing the large horse back from her journey!

    Re: Valkyrie and horse

Not all horses in nordic mythology was small and icelandic...The god Odin did ride an enormous eight-legged ( ! ) horse named "Sleipnir". In real life the vikings got around a bit in the world and probably brought home large horses from their journeys.

If I remember correctly the Valkyries had flying horses wich they rode in the skies above battles.

I have been looking for an image of that long-horned bronze-age helmet but I didn´t have any luck, perhaps it only exists in my imagination...The little round metal things are called "fibulas" and was a sort of "safety-pins" which viking women used to hold up clothes.

There has been a recent reconstruction of viking clothing which appears to have been much more "oriental" and colorful than one would expect, take a look here !

If your horse has eight legs, its torso must be huge.
