My own Soul Calibur character design :D

    Attachment: shidori-wip24.jpg

Wohoo, I think I can call this one finished now. But I (or you) will most likely find some errors or ways to improve it so some changes will probably be made... But, what do you think? C&C are more then welcome. Oh, about that SCIV logo, I just put it there to see how it would look :P It's not going to be there in the (final) final version ;)

    Jim,

Don't know the game or it's characters but this is a wonderfully complex painting, very impressed..............................just one thing.

Her head/neck doesn't appear to be part of the same person to me, something about it seems unnatural.

I agree....seems to be a bit large and not set properly. I think the neck might be too thick. I also think that the angle is wrong....not sure though.

Is her head to small? the neck too long, crap :S I couldn't tell a donkey's face apart from a human on this one since I've been looking at it for waay too long :( Everybody that helps me out will  get a cookie ;)

It's worse than that.....she's dead Jim.....

Okay couldn't resist that, but I think the problem is that it doesn't appear as though her chin is sticking out...it appears as though it's part of her neck...as though she doesn't have a chin actually. I do think her neck is too long. It really should only be a little over five fingers width or so between the trapezius and the ear. After all if you place your hand on the side of your neck you can cover the distance with barely spreading your fingers and thumb....about like a "high five".

Her head appears to be twisted round to an uncomfortable degree, and there's no indication of the effect of twisting on the neck muscles.

I'm not too sure about the neck length either. Look what happens when you paint out the fabric. Does it look a tad too long? I'm still not sure...

I also think that the neck lacks definition. To turn the head to such a degree would stretch the neck muscles, which'll give it tension.

Its a sexy pose. I wonder if you reduce the amounts of folds on the body suit, it'll compliment the body shape more...

    Ah-HA!!

I just noticed about the head and part of why it looks soo odd....her eyes....they are angled up too much...especially the outside corners in relation to the inside corners. If you draw a line through the corners of her eyes around her head....the line travels across her nose and then upward toward the crown of her head. It should travel down and through her ear.

Which would of course require a slight rework of her face...especially the eyebrows.

That does look 'right'. But has it lost, for want of a better word, the 'charm' of the angled eyes.

Jim - I hope you follow this crit up. I think you've got a solid design here - the sort of stuff games companies like to see.

I do like Martin's paintover, but I've got to agree with Tysall. By losing the slanted eyes you've turned the character from being japanese to being american wearing japanese clothing. It really changes the feel of the image, brightens it up and takes away the 'charm' Tysall's mentioned.

I like the slanted eyes, but maybe not quite on such a slant to the cheek.

Personally I preferred a bit of slant to the eyes myself, my main intention was to fix the neck.

I will make a new version tomorrow (if I'm not to hungover...) and post it here :) I think this will be good. The eyes will still look asian though.
