ImagineFX is bringing people together...

The best part of my day today was catching up with an old friend of mine, Chris Blarsky. I hadn't talked to him in years so to receive an email out of the blue was such a welcome and unexpected surprise. And how he found me was an even bigger surprise... it was through one the articles I did for ImagineFX! HOW COOL IS THAT?!??! I'm now reconnected with one of the coolest, most down to earth artists I've ever met because of this magazine. I love it

It was great to hear he is doing well and still painting up a storm. Chris is an awesome artist and not limited to just on medium, which is something I really admire. He just posted his first thread here and although he is a traditional artist by trade, he is working on taking up digital art. I hope to get a chance to help him make that transition as I know how weird it can be in the beginning but more importantly, Im just stoked to have my friend back :) - J

When Rice Bowls ATTACK!!!

Whazzappennin?!?!

Man, these past three weeks have been incredibly busy! Here's a recap of what I've been up to:

My
wife is finally home after having major surgery for appendicitis. She's
doing great and almost completely healed which is such a relief
considering she was walking around with a ruptured appendix
for almost a week. The doctors said she was extremely lucky and from
what I've heard, a ruptured appendix can be bad situation if not taken
care of immediately. How she got away with walking around in her
condition for almost a week is beyond me but it goes to show just how
high my girl's tolerance for pain is. I guess it comes naturally,
especially if you have to put up with me everyday :)

It's been
posted on CGTalk's Anatomy Forum for some time now but for those who
haven't heard, Rebecca Kimmel and I have put together a new site at www.foundationalarts.com.
The site is a virtual studio space and outlet for displaying more of
our personal work. So far I've posted some older work along with a few
figure/portrait studies but I'll be posting WIP's and ongoing
anatomy/figure drawing tutorials. There are no plans of making it into
an open forum at the moment but it may become one later down the line.

I
haven't the had the time to work on too much personal stuff apart from
an occasional sketch here and there but now that things are some what
back to normal, I'll be posting some new work in the upcoming weeks. I
also have a handful of tutorials in the works for several apps
including Photoshop, ZBrush, and Painter. Some of these will be in
video and pdf format and I will be posting links to them as they happen.

Apart
from that, everything seems to be pretty chill at the mo. Just want to
take this time to thank the community and ImagineFX for their continued
support and would like to remind everyone if you have any questions or
comments, I'm always around and willing to share my knowledge so feel
free to hit me up any time! - J

Mountainous Terrain Tutorial

This

One word... SICK!

Balls to the wall sick. Balls in a pair of vice-grips sick. Sledge-hammer to the ... ok, you get the idea.

I've been collecting the annual since it first came out and it's one of those things I'm obsessed with around this time every year. What blows my mind is that as corny as it sounds, each year the art just gets better and better. For me, this year is particularly special for two reasons. One, I get to see work by artists I've gotten to know over the past year. And two, Jeffery Jones took the Grand Master Award this year.

Now there are few artists that I truly, truly, absolutely adore. Very few. And if I had to choose the art of only one artist to view for the rest of my life, it would be Jeffrey Jones. I have had such complete admiration for this beautiful person and the work she has done since I was a kid, that it completely thrilled me to no end when I turned the page and saw that she had been chosen as Spectrum's choice for Grand Master. It is a truly deserving honor.

So yeah. This year's Spectrum Annual is ridiculously good.
