random wierdness from the life of a comic book colorist

My deep decent into...

no, not my deep decent into alcoholism (although that's a GREAT song by The New Pornographers) but rather my deep decent underground yet again. 4 days of almost complete radio silence (or rather wireless internet silence) lie ahead. I've been spending so much time underground lately that I'm thinking of applying for full clanship into the ranks of a Dwarven clan, or failing that, looking on ebay for one of those miner hats with the light on it. Because you can find ANYTHING on ebay right?

Seriously though, I won't complain. After all, I'm just coloring. It's not like I've got to swing a pick axe or worry about collapsing cave roofs, mining dust or anything like that. Been a big change of pace switching back and forth between Hero By Night pages (of which issue 3 colors are coming along nicely in case there are any of my editors reading this :D ) and coloring a lot of work over lines from my buddy Jim Muniz. The guy's style has grown on me a LOT working over his lines, and I think his attention to facial expression and sense of dramatic lighting is superb. It's also helping me to grow exponentially better as a colorist to work over such dissimilar artistic styles as well. It really allows me to open my my own arsenal of tools, techniques and knowledge, and have FUN, instead of having to adhere to one particular style of rendering. Don't get me wrong, I obviously still have my own style and way of doing things, however I think that there are enough things that I do differently as well so that the casual reader will look at my work and say "wow, that dude did THIS too, didn't he do this over there and that's totally nothing like this here" you know? probably not, now I'm rambling and procrastinating, prolonging the self-imposed wireless decent into leading a more productive, healthy and normal lifestyle. K, my wife is probably dying laughing as she reads this so I better get to it before I end up taking someone to the emergency room for a THIRD time in the last month :D
